Fair Trade, Passion, and Fashion

Fair Trade, Passion, and Fashion

Posted by Raven + Lily on 11th Jun 2014

Sharla Megilligan is good friend of Raven + Lily and an inspirational woman who knows what empowerment feels like, and desires to bring that out in others. She is the founder of Makarios non-profit and Dominican Joe Coffee Shop. Through her time working in the Dominican Republic and with businesses in America, she has realized the importance of fair trade practices. The coffee shop provides a guaranteed market for Dominican coffee farmers to sell their beans to, providing empowerment for small scale coffee farmers. Sharla has seen how job opportunities through coffee allow Dominicans to have more stable incomes. This provides families with more funds to dedicate to education. This is how many of R+L artisans have benefited as well. With our women artisans bringing income into the family, they now are able to send their children to school, which creates sustainable empowerment for the whole family.

Sharla is modeling the Srey Black Long Contrast Dress in three different ways.

Since she is a mothers of two young boys, she would most often wear this dress in a casual, comfortable way. We put together her "Casual Look" by accessorizing with the Alem Taupe and Black String Tassel NecklaceFerdoz Thin Wood Gold BanglesZia Gold Leaf Leather Earrings, and a cotton and leather tote. This is the perfect everyday outfit for Sharla. She can drop the boys off at school, run to meetings, speak at an event, and stay looking R+L lovely all day.

Sharla started the process of adopting Jakob and Isaak when they were 15 months old. It took over six years and traveling to three different countries to finalize the adoption papers. Now, Jakob and Isaak are eight years old, silly, smart, and insanely lovable.

Sharla's second look is "Elegant and Earthy." She is styled in items from the R+L Ethiopian collection. By adding a pair of Toms' Black Canvas Strappy WedgesAdera Bird Charm Bracelet, Tiffany Kunz Earrings, Tiffany Kunz Fringe Fade Bracelet, and the Tigist Kaleidoscope Necklace we have prepared her for a gala, date night, or dancing.

The last look is "Edgy Empowerment." By adding a leather jacket, Salenyia Wide Hill Top BangleSalenyia Thin Gold BangleEden Fusion Leather Snap Gold Bracelet, and the Almaz Multi Leaf Leather Necklace, we created a bold and edgy look for an evening out in Austin.

We loved spending the day with Sharla, her warm smile, and those blue eyes. We are thankful for women like her in the Austin community who share like minded socially conscious missions and live them out through their lifestyles.

The wardrobe styling was done by Christine Knueven, R+L's Marketing Coordinator.
