Our Founder's Reflection on Being Thankful

Posted by Kirsten Dickerson on 14th Nov 2017

Every Thanksgiving I take the time to reflect on the past year. There has been a lot of change this year for Raven + Lily as well as my family. I often battle through worry and stress as I encounter change or transition, but the best way I can battle the temptation to fear is to focus on gratitude. There are four sources I turn to when I want to quiet my heart and remember all that is good: My family, nature, the women in the Raven + Lily partnerships, and finally my hope and faith in God.

As I think about my family this Thanksgiving, I realize what an incredible source of love, peace, and trust we have. We moved in January to a charming small town as we embraced a new job opportunity for my husband. Kids started a new school, and I had to figure out how to run a company outside of its home base. We had to build a new community of local friends. Its never easy to start over, but having a family that really loves and trusts each other makes it possible to thrive in such change. This Thanksgiving I give thanks for my amazing husband and precious kids. I couldn't do life without them.

No matter where I travel or what each day holds, I always take time to step outside, breath deeply, and enjoy the natural beauty around me. I'm so grateful for the natural wonders we've been gifted to enjoy each day. My animals, the birds, the trees, the flowers, and the changing seasons. What a blessing that we have the gift of nature to enjoy, cherish, and welcome into our lives. Its a source of peace and healing for me daily. I'm so thankful.

Whenever I'm tempted to think negatively or feel sorry for myself, I quickly remember the amazing strength and resilience of the women in the Raven + Lily artisan partnerships around the world. I have known and followed the journey of many of these women for years. Their stories and lives are an incredible source of inspiration and hope to me. I'm so grateful for their testimony of empowerment and true beauty. I would have given up on running a fashion company a long time ago if it hadn't been for the amazing women behind the scenes. I wear their strength daily in the products they make for Raven + Lily, and they remind me to be thankful no matter the circumstances.

Each Thanksgiving, I take time to mediate on all the goodness God has shown me that year. Cultivating a daily routine of prayer and practicing the presence of God promotes an ongoing conversation in my heart for the people and places I encounter throughout each day. I'm thankful for a loving and forgiving God who values all people equally.

Finally, I'm grateful for you, our customers and partners in empowering women. You are creating a movement that values people and the planet. It's amazing to witness.

So as we approach this festive season, let us remember to pause, reflect, and practice a heart and mind of gratitude. Its good for our souls and its good for the world.

With deepest gratitude,

Kirsten
